# Usage, plans & billing

> Review hosted API plans, monitor request usage, and manage billing.

Plans set account-wide monthly request limits and per-minute rate limits. All API keys under an account share those limits.

## Plans

| Plan | Price | Requests per month | Requests per minute |
| - | - | - | - |
| Indie | \$19 | 250,000 | 600 |
| Pro | \$79 | 2,000,000 | 2,400 |

## Team plans

| Plan | Price | Requests per month | Requests per minute |
| - | - | - | - |
| Team | \$149 | 5,000,000 | 6,000 |
| Business | \$399 | 20,000,000 | 15,000 |

## How usage is measured

Each API response reports its request cost in `X-MTA-API-Request-Cost`. Most endpoints cost 1; `/api/v1/subway/arrival-board` and `/api/v1/bus/arrival-board` cost 2. The account's monthly and per-minute limits apply across all of its API keys.

Responses can include these quota headers:

| Header | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `X-MTA-API-Request-Cost` | Cost assigned to the endpoint for this request. |
| `X-MTA-API-Credits-Remaining` | Remaining requests in the account's current monthly usage window, when available. |
| `X-MTA-API-RateLimit-Limit` | Account-wide per-minute limit, when available. |
| `X-MTA-API-RateLimit-Remaining` | Requests remaining in the current per-minute window, when available. |

The API reports the endpoint cost separately from Unkey's account-wide request limits. The usage value is based on the account limits returned by Unkey; the response headers are only present when that information is available.

## Check your usage

* Open the **Usage** tab in the [dashboard](https://www.mtaapi.dev/dashboard?tab=usage) to view requests grouped by API key for the billing period.
* Use the MCP `get_usage` account tool to retrieve per-key and aggregate usage.
* Inspect the quota headers on REST responses for the current request's cost and available limits.

## Upgrade or manage billing

Open the **Billing** tab in the [dashboard](https://www.mtaapi.dev/dashboard?tab=billing). The Clerk pricing table lets you choose or upgrade a plan. Use **Manage billing** to manage an existing subscription.

## When a limit is reached

The API rejects requests when Unkey reports an exhausted limit:

| Limit | HTTP response |
| - | - |
| Monthly request limit reached | `429 Too Many Requests`, `error: "UsageExceeded"`, `code: "USAGE_EXCEEDED"` |
| Per-minute rate limit reached | `429 Too Many Requests`, `error: "RateLimited"`, `code: "RATE_LIMITED"` |

The response body includes a message describing which limit was exceeded. See [Authentication](https://mtaapi.dev/docs/authentication.md) for the exact messages and key errors.

## Cancellation

When a subscription is canceled at the end of its billing period, the account's billing metadata records `cancelAtPeriodEnd` and `accessEndsAt`. API keys remain available until `accessEndsAt` and expire at that time; access does not end immediately when cancellation is scheduled.
