Plans set account-wide monthly request limits and per-minute rate limits. All API keys under an account share those limits.

How usage is measured

Each API response reports its request cost in X-MTA-API-Request-Cost. Most endpoints cost 1; /api/v1/subway/arrival-board and /api/v1/bus/arrival-board cost 2. The account’s monthly and per-minute limits apply across all of its API keys. Responses can include these quota headers: The API reports the endpoint cost separately from Unkey’s account-wide request limits. The usage value is based on the account limits returned by Unkey; the response headers are only present when that information is available.

Check your usage

  • Open the Usage tab in the dashboard to view requests grouped by API key for the billing period.
  • Use the MCP get_usage account tool to retrieve per-key and aggregate usage.
  • Inspect the quota headers on REST responses for the current request’s cost and available limits.

Upgrade or manage billing

Open the Billing tab in the dashboard. The Clerk pricing table lets you choose or upgrade a plan. Use Manage billing to manage an existing subscription.

When a limit is reached

The API rejects requests when Unkey reports an exhausted limit: The response body includes a message describing which limit was exceeded. See Authentication for the exact messages and key errors.

Cancellation

When a subscription is canceled at the end of its billing period, the account’s billing metadata records cancelAtPeriodEnd and accessEndsAt. API keys remain available until accessEndsAt and expire at that time; access does not end immediately when cancellation is scheduled.
